I "rebuilt" a 50yr old king size quilt years ago just holding it in my lap with no hoop. It sometimes took some creative maneuvering to hold the area where I was working but it I got it done and loved doing it.
It was a quilt my BFF's mother had made in the late 1940s. When she died suddenly in the early 1970s my BFF's father put it on his bed and wouldn't take it off. And with all the laundering, cats and dogs sleeping on the bed over the years it was in pretty bad shape. I kind of felt her presence while repairing it (I grew up across the street and knew her well).
