When my twins went to college(in the 90's) I made them each a quilt/comforter we dubbed "the big ugly". ;-) I made one in a rail fence, the other in either a 4 or 9 patch,I think. Did them on the serger. Then I used a puffy poly batt, backed them with a low loft fleece (like jogging suits) and tied them. They were great for indoors, outdoors, in the car,etc and wash and wear forever. Our daughter still looks at hers once in a while with nostalgia and recalls a garment made for her, me, her grandma, etc. Definitely good for charity projects.
