Hi there... yes, if it's a Singer. There is a ton of info out there on the machine. If the plate you are mentioning is on the bed of the machine, and it's a number or letter/number combination of 8 or so digits, then it's the Singer serial number. The website will give you the month/year of the allotment it was made in. And if records are available, it can also tell you what it believes the base model number is.

If the number plaque is on the pillar of the machine, either on it's own brass plaque on the front pillar, or written on the top of the stitch length plate... then that is the model number of the machine. (again, if it's a Singer).

If you post a picture of the front/back... it's likely that we can help you identify it.
