In a magazine I saw where they actually sewed the yarn or other piece to the quilt. SO, you took the yarn, sewed in place over the yarn and then tied it. It was suggested for tough fabrics (so you arent trying to pull in thru) or even to use ribbon or lace instead of yarn. (hope this makes sense...)
