It was suggested for tough fabrics (so you arent trying to pull in thru) or even to use ribbon or lace instead of yarn. (hope this makes sense...)
I did this on a custom made (not by me) baby quilt that had no batting and had fusible on the Minkee borders. It worked quite well. I tried tying the usual way but the fabric was so tough the needle wouldn't go through.
