I use the Thimblelady stainless steel thimble for hand quilting. Rarely do a I use a thimble for just regular hand sewing. The Thimblelady also is open ended and allows you to push with the pad of your finger. I agree it's much more comfortable. Cost is about $30. I started with their plastic version for about 1/2 that to see if I like the style.
