Oh yes I took the presser foot off. I was trying to open the plate over the feed dogs but it won't unscrew. It could be that there's part of the needle in there. I tried a new needle and put it on slow speed and it seemed to be o.k. until I tried to thread it with the automatic threader which got jammed and broke another needle. I feel a little encouraged that it might not be a totally complicated repair.
