Well i've never done it with fabric amma. Years ago i would buy the packages of little white plastic rings, and i would crochet a yo-yo right around the ring, then sew it onto the crocheted sweater. So this is my thought, cut a circle of fabric, couple inches around, lay down on table wrong side up, then put down a layer of fiber fill, then lay down your plastic ring, then sew around outside edge like a yo-yo, and pull stitches real tight. Gathered edge is back of your button, then sew the centre to your project :)
