Hi Mary,
for the edges I do the "Knife Edge" - it's a traditional English method of closing the edges. All 3 layers are cut to one length after the quilting is finished. I cut to a width of one inch, measured from the last row of quilting stitches. The next step is to shorten the batting a little. Than I fold the backing towards the inside around the batting. The top is also folded to the inside at the same length. The folded edge will be closed with small running stitches.
I hope that makes sense! You don't need a binding for this method, the quilt is quite flat and not very wavy.
