We call Europe a lot (2-5 X weekly) so a land line is a must. The $$ they want for European calls on Verizon are just not worth it. We have a separate cell phone that we use when we go to Europe - the pay-as-you-go kind and just top it up at the grocery store when we arrive (which is usually one of our first pit stops anyway).
My "land line" though is Vonage and we get Europe, Canada, Mexico, and a handful of Caribe nations for a flat fee.
