Practice, practice, practice. If you saw my first attempt years ago you would have laughed so hard and dumped it right in the garbage. Start out with simple loops and swirls and before you know it you will feel comfortable in trying other shapes. Keep at it!!
Do you start in the middle and work out to the edges?
Yes. I know most quilters pin baste, I don't. I prefer to baste my quilt as if for hand quilting. For me, I don't get the tucks on the backing. It just is much easier (for me) to fmq this way.
