I read a book called, "Shot Silk" once. It was a mystery, but I remember them saying that silk used to be dyed with some lead in the dye (probably other fabrics too, used lead dyes). This is what made the silk deteriorate at a later date. I agree your antique blocks are beautiful, and we will never know who made them.
