If you have enough seam allowances available, I would try to sew the seams using the ladder stitch with thread that matches as closely as possible.

I would avoid using mono-filament thread. I just don't like it.

If you don't have enough seam allowance to hold without fraying out - then stabilize the area as well as you can, and applique something over the area.
