I have used invisible ladder stitch to fix a problem of unmatched points in an otherwise finished top. It's really easier than trying to do it with the machine, even when there's no quilting yet, and there's no worry about stiffness. If you can crease the line you want to sew with an iron and starch, you'll have an easier time putting the stitches right where you want them.
