That's the idea! Make the most pieced blocks first then cut the alternate squares.
Cut your squares for 4-patch @ 3.5".......your alternate sq. will likely be cut in the 6.5" range.
OR
Cut your squares for 4-patch @ 4".......your alternate sq. will likely be cut in the 7.5" range.
