I use the Elmer's white washable school glue and have to iron it to make it stick. Always washes out just fine. Have also used glue stick on freezer paper applique; again, washes out with water.
When using the Elmer's glue to "pin" seams, after hitting it with the iron, if I need to loosen the seam again I just put a drop of water on my finger, apply it to the glue, then pull the seam allowances apart. No problem.
