Yes you can. One of the old fashioned ways was to use newspaper. cut to the size of your block and crazy piece over it and then when finished trim and remove the paper.
A stabilizer would be the same as muslin and would have to be left on the block. There was a post from someone who did a crazy/string border on adding machine paper and when finished trimmed and removed the paper.
