About 10 years ago we sold a 1991 Camry, and the young man who bought it needed a car because he'd totaled his previous one. He told me about the accident, in which he was not wearing a seatbelt. His right leg was broken in several places and his pelvis was crushed when he slammed into the steering wheel, and there were multiple internal injuries and a long, painful recovery. I was showing him the car, and that particular model had a passive restraint system with the shoulder belt mounted to the door frame, and it would come boogieing across your body as you closed the door. As he got into the car and this happened, he turned to me and said, "The first thing I'm going to do is cut that darn thing off." Go figure.
