I always wash it first. I fill the washer with water, a little detergent and let it sit for 30 min or so. Then I rinse it and put it in my dryer. I use a gentle cycle on the rinse part. Have been doing this for many years and had no troubles. I figure since I prewash my material, I should do the same with the batting. Good luck.
