I learned to quilt back in the day when there were not a lot of tools, so we learned to improvise. Now it seems like there's a gimmick for everything you can think of, and some it isn't even *worth* thinking of! I rarely buy them.

I have no qualm about using the right tool, though, but it seems ludicrous to me to have six different 8" square rulers, for example; or papers for making 5" half-square triangles when they can be so easily done with just 2 fabric squares; or a $10 pattern for a quilt made up of just squares and/or rectangles when graph paper and a little calculator are my best friends!
