Not all batiks are tightly woven, and do not fray. Some are looser and soft more like regular cottons.

Batiks are made with a wax to create the pattern. A good explanation is on wiki
I was assuming the waxing method and dyeing was understood....ADDITIONALLY batiks that I have purchased have ALWAYS not frayed/fringed on the edges like my "regular" quilting cottons. I guess my source(s) are consistent.
