I think there is no rule here. I add folks whose work I like. Then I can click on my buddy list on their name and see if they have posted anything new. Anyone else chime in on this?
I do that too, then you can see how a particular project is going, keep in touch with anyone you may have met in person or those who have a similar quilting style (or special addiction - like vintage:)). People here are very open and friendly, so sending someone a private message or adding them as a buddy is not something to stress about.
