That was the hardest part for me too, just step back from it, look at finished examples so you can see what it is supposed to look like and attack it slowly. Do a dry run without ironing or sewing anything down to see if it makes sense. I was able to figure it out finally this way. I know it's not super helpful, but it's what worked for me.
