My art quilt group played with rusting fabric and dying in caustic soap, tanic acid and iron sulfate for the lawn to produce some interesting pieces. We did tie dye methods and dipping and for the rusting -we found nails, steel wool, old tools etc. Dampen the fabric, place over rusted object, spray with vinegar and cover for overnite-you could put some salt on too and see what you get. Fabric needs to be treated or washed prior to dying and let it air dry and couple of days. Rinse in Senthopal and if you want to overdye go for it! Moosegirl
