Binoculars held the wrong way round can give the same effect. I'm happy that I have my digital camera - it's really an advantage we have over women who quilted in the past. I often take pictures of different colour arrangements or setting options, thus I can compare different arrangements.
Edited to add, that I forgot to mention that I like the quilt and would follow up on the tea dye idea. I hope you will show us the result if you try it.
