I have used a damp dryer sheet to clean gunk off the bottom of my iron before. Seems to work pretty well.

As far as preventing this from happening again, maybee you can cover your work with a light piece of fabric? a towel? I don't know. Have never used heat and bond before, but have used iron on thing to T-shirts. covering your work with a towel is a must for most iron-on projects.
