The Singer 48k looks pretty much like that, but is fairly rare in the US. More common is the Model 12 New Family. Both are transverse shuttle machines, and have needleplates that look like that. The difference between the two is basically that the 48 has a rectangular bed and the 12 has a fiddle bed.

With that needleplate, it looks more like a German made machine to me, altho I'd swear I saw a Singer recently that had a needleplate like that...I just can't remember where!
Either way, it dates to the late 1800s-very early 1900's...
