My son was in The Netherlands and Germany for a business trip last week. I had asked him to look for some cotton fabric for me while there. He is fairly fluent in German but for some strange reason(to me anyway) quiltmaking was not covered in his vocabulary. At any rate, he finally found this little sewing shop in Friedrichshafen and managed to tell the ladies there what he wanted. The fabric is beautiful quality, so soft and silky. Could someone translate what is written on the selvedges in the second picture?? Is it perhaps similar to our Aunt Grace 30's reproductions? I did learn that a metre is 39 inches but when the ladies learned that it was for an American quilter they cut each piece a generous 42 inches. I was surprised to find that it was 56 inches wide rather than our 42-44 inches. It was 10-14 euros per metre...is that pretty standard for good quality cotton? I wish he had kept the receipt from the shop so I could send a thank you note.
