Sure. No need to go as far as the borders. I'd like to point out that sometimes it is easier to hand sew the replacement block than to line it up exactly using the machine. You don't have to remove any stitches beyond the piece that needs to be replaced. Personally, I would find that easier than doing a little applique, but that's just me. Use a ladder stitch and work from the front side, and it won't show at all.
