Another cheap and easy way is to use dry grits. I live in senior housing and we had fire ants all over because of the thick mulching. So one day I took my box outside and put it on the sidewalk where the ants were. Next day no ants on the sidewalk, so the other residents and I poured out boxes next to the building. Fire ants gone for the whole summer.
