I have a Mariner's Compass book that I checked out from the library that gives step by step instructions. The patterns in the book are for up to a 32inch center medallion and are paper pieced. It is called Mariner's Compass Quilts, Setting a New Course written by Judy Mathieson
I believe this book will give you something that would satisfy your urge to make long skinny points. I have the book and will someday make a huge medallion compass star.

Thanks Loretta but I think the original poster is looking for something more complex than my little star block. It might be nice as a border or corner block though if done in complementary colors.
