This is a "quick" method where by you draw arcs using an arc shaped template on the right side of sheets of thin iron on vilene and place this sheet on the fabric . Place the vilene adhesive side to the right side of the fabric. Stitch around the concave and convex edges on all marked lines on arcs then cut them out, allowing 1/8" seam allowance Then using heamastats turn them inside out and viole, a neatened arc ready for applique using the iron on a plain square of background. Stitch with invisible thread using a small zig-zig. Accuracy is crucial with placement. Hope this helps solve the mystery Dawn.
