I have done similar things too! Cut something I didn't want to, cut a backing short, etc. Not fun, but at least fixable.
I have had the edge of the backing fold back on itself and leave a patch which I could not remove because of all the stitching that was done. I know my uncle won't mind or even suspect anything is wrong but my aunt----I don't know about her.
