Keep up what you are doing and brush off the negatives. Have you tried a LQS for some hands on advice? My LQS owner has been wonderful to me helping me with stuff I couldn't figure out. Hang in there and the light bulb will go off.
My Nana always said "Opinions are like butts, everyone has one, but they don't belong in the middle of the room!" You just do what you do, and when the 'craft police' show up, just picture them with their 'butt in the middle of the room', smile, then do it your way.
