I have the PQ1500S. My solution is to hand crank the wheel until the needle arm is in its highest position before I cut. Others on here have mentioned using less holes in the thread guide.
Also, remember the bobbin thread will not be visible on this machine when you use the thread cutter. It will be there and ready to sew but not pulled up like in many machines.
