Honestly I think your feathers look great! One thing that Leah Day suggests on applique FMquilting is to always outline the applique part... in your case, the stars....they may not be appliqued, but going around them would help set them apart better from the feathers, kwim?
It truly does just take practice.....some move up faster than others, but I truly believe that everyone can FMQ!
