It matters not when you find a passion--just that you do! My first real quilt was a dresden plate pillow. I still have it somewhere, and I used to look at it for encouragement. I have made several bed-sized quilts, lots of lap robes, things that you can wrap around your shoulder, and a whole lot of wall hangings. Quilting is addictive and it is fun. It also keeps you off the streets unless you are looking for fabric or supplies.
I encourage you to do your thing with fabric. I have so much fabric that I wonder if I will ever get it all used before I die... if I don't, then I win!
