Definitely shoes. I have really bad feet and am unable to walk on my hard floors without shoes. My machine in in a room with hard floors, therefore, shoes!
I wear shoes most of the time around the house. However, I get a better 'feel' for the machine barefoot. I can control one stitch at a time barefoot. With shoes sometimes the machine gets away from me -- speed wise.
