Pecularly. because people expect the quilt to hang down both sides of a bed, and at the bottom, sometimes, the side to side width equals the top to bottom length.

Also if the number of blocks is the same for length and width, it is going to make a square, which is easier not to make mistakes on....since every side is the same, all four lengths are the same for construction.
It also often can be turned any way when it is on the bed.
