I never wash my fabrics, unless there is a chance they might run, and no I didn't wash the batting first, I just didn't realize that it would shrink that much.
(After I make a quilt I always wash it with "Retain" which keeps the colours from running, it also keeps the colours looking good longer.)
I have always used warm & natural batting and I've never pre-wash it or the fabrics, and they've never ever puckered this much, but maybe it was just luck. On a side not I always use good quality flannel on my quilt backs and I DO pre-wash them all the time.

wait you did not wash the fabric first or the batting???
Either way, the reason it crinkled up is because something shrunk..
Both the fabric and the batting should have been washed prior to using them, so then you would not have had this crinkled, old quilt look!
It has nothing to do with WHICH batting you used, all of them would have done this...even poly if the fabric was unwashed , as the fabric also shrinks!
