These are thick enough that they only require the insulate, however, Here is what I do if I were just going to make very simole potholders,,(like backing,insulbright,THEN a layer of batting,,then top layer,,,,I put binding on mine, but you could easily just do pillowcase style,,,,which would be as follows: insulbrite, batting, backing,right side up, then top layer, face down......sew around edges, leave a small opening to turn,,, then hand stitch opening closed, and sew all aroud 1/4" for a nice finish. easy peasy also.......jacie
