The quilt was a gift and he obviously meant it for her. IMHO
I use warm and natural/white in my quilts for my sons and they love it. Warm enough, but not too warm. For daily use I made a simple 4 patch with a camping themed pattern square in between. This is for everyday use and is very loved. Your son will love whatever you create for him.
