I just used a high loft poly batting from a LQS. Don't know the weight as it was off a roll, but it was at least 1 inch high. I machine quilted it and it worked fine. It would be a little harder to hand quilt, but doable. The stitches may not be as small.
ok cool. I'm going to get the extra loft poly fil cuz it said on the package it's a medium weight. thanks everyone!
