I saw on Simply Quilts that when this problem arises that it is perfectly acceptable to make a border around the smaller blocks to make them the same size as the rest of the blocks. Just make sure it is the same material and prewashed. Do you think maybe there was enough material in the backs of her shirts to use? If not maybe you can sacrifice one of yours or dads t shirts to bring all the blocks to the correct size.. Hope this helps you.
