Were you trying to quilt with a longarm machine?
I believe I would take sections of this quilt sandwich, and freemotion stipple the areas where fabric "sags". You would have worse mess if you tried to cut out the quilted stitches here. I am sorry you experienced this dilemma. I don't think my Trapunto idea would work very well here! Good luck, Alice.
