Lots of things hitch rides from far away... zebra mussels came to the Great Lakes in ships' ballast from Eastern Europe... and the emerald ash borer probably came on a ship, too, in the wood or packing crates or similar material.

All fabrics come from overseas these days, and we get many boxes a week from from fabric companies whose mills are in China, Japan, or South Korea. Still, we have never ever seen a bug on any of the many bolts of fabric we've handled.
