Have you tried using the 1/4" masking tape or the 1/4" commercial tape made for quilters? I use the 1/4", 1/2", and 1" masking tapes to do "cross-hatching the background areas. Note on my attached photo of my 22" sq. "Amish Hearts" mini-quilt.
