Welcome friend, yes, it is best to use a walking foot to do the binding. It isn't a must, but it surely does make the process more enjoyable for me. There are lots and lots of wonderful turorials on binding online and on this site. Just type in, "Tutorial for sewing binding". I wish I lived by you. I would love to help you with it. It is my favorite part of finishing a wall hanging.
