It seems like an easy, "no-brainer" to me... but I haven't heard much mention of this idea. Just wondering...
Generally, I try to use fabric from my stash that I no longer "need" to keep. I've never used a wide back, but prefer to piece together what I have. I have used striped fabric, and as you point out, the seams beome almost invisible.
