Have you ever heard of animals being washed into the storm sewers during a downpour?

We just had a real gully-washer come through (much needed!) and as the rain decreased, I heard what sounded like a bird's distress call.

I went out to investigate and found that there were two raccoons stuck in the storm sewers, clinging onto the pipes leading into one of the sump holes (or whatever they're called).

After the time it took to find out who in the town/county is in charge of the storm sewers, I went out again and the raccoons are not there anymore. I assume they are working on finding their way out, since the rain has stopped and the water levels are dropping.

I've never heard before of animals getting washed into storm drains but it makes sense that this would happen; we haven't had rain in six weeks so the raccoons probably thought that the pipes were a good place to shelter or even sleep.

Has anyone else ever heard of this happening?
